Weekly Crime Report for 10/19/15

Here is the Midtown weekly crime report, for the week ending 10-19-15. For this report, Midtown is the area from 35W to Hiawatha, between 28thand 32nd Streets. The report is attached as a Word file and the text is reprinted below.

 

There were  18 Part 1 (most serious) crimes reported last week, up from 15 last week. This included the homicide at Park and Lake as well as 4 robberies and 2 aggravated assaults. An arrest has been made in the homicide case.

 

City Council Member Alondra Cano is sponsoring a conversation about crime problems and solutions, particularly along East Lake Street, on Monday, Oct.26, 5:30 pm at Circulo de Amigos Child Care Center, 2830 Cedar Ave. See the report for more information.

 

The MPD is asking for the public’s help in solving the severe beating of a Native American woman at 12th and Lake on Sept. 3. If you have any information, please get in touch with CrimeStoppers as outlined in the report. You may be eligible for a cash reward.

 

“A Taste of Phillips” Festival takes place this Saturday, Oct. 24, 4-8 pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 2742 15th Ave S. There is more information in the report.

 

We are looking for community impact statements on Lamario Lamont Calhoun, who has been charged with felony 3rd  Degree Sale of Narcotics in Elliot Park and two cases of Trespass; one in Midtown Phillips, the other in Phillips West. Midtown Area Crime Report, Week of 10-13 to 10-19-15

Midtown is the area between Highway 35W and Hiawatha Ave, between 28th St E and 32nd St E

Summary

  • There were 18 Part 1 crimes during the week, up from 15 last week. Part 1 crimes include homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, arson, auto theft and larceny. Public information for all but the larceny (theft) incidents appears below.
  • There were 7 violent crimes-1 homicide, 4 robberies and 2 aggravated assaults.
  • There were no rapes or arsons reported during this week.
  • There was one business robbery and no business burglaries reported during the week.

 

Targeted Enforcement Areas

Lake Street (West End) area (29th St E to 32nd St E, 2nd Ave S to Chicago Ave S) was a targeted enforcement area for street crimes this week. Strategies included directed patrols, beat officers, undercover details, Metro Transit extra patrol at bus stops, CPS meeting with management of a Lake St business to resolve problems, monitor activity at 30xx Clinton and business nodes meetings.

 

Lake/Bloomington area (29th St E to 31st St E, 12th Ave S to 16th Ave S) was a targeted enforcement area for street crimes this week. Strategies included directed patrols, beat officers, Metro Transit PD extra patrol at bus stops, business outreach meetings, business nodes meetings, working with businesses to get more lights at 15th & Lake and moving a camera to 15th and Lake.

 

Part 1 Crimes in Midtown This Week (Excluding Larceny)

Homicide (1)

10-13, 6:54 pm  Lake St E & Park Ave S Ave S (Phillips West neighborhood) Assault 2 report taken at the listed location. Note: The victim later died from her injuries and officers arrested Gerald Nicolas Cepeda for Murder (Felony).

 

Robbery (4)

10-13, 10:09 pm  28xx 12th Ave S (Midtown Phillips neighborhood) Victim said three males approached him from behind while he was walking home from a friends house. He said Suspect 1 asked him for a cigarette and then all three males started hitting him. He fell to the ground and Suspect 1 punched him in the top of the head causing a small laceration. The other males kicked him in the ribs and back. They took the listed items and ran in an unknown direction. Victim had limited suspect info. Emergency Medical Services checked the male and he was released at the scene.

 

10-19, 4:44 pm  Lake St E & Bloomington Ave S (Border of Midtown Phillips, East Phillips and Powderhorn Park neighborhoods) Robbery at knife point, loss was a cell phone.

 

10-19, 11:00 pm  28xx 13th Ave S (Midtown Phillips neighborhood) The listed location was robbed at gunpoint.

 

10-11, 4:18 am  Lake St E & Bloomington Ave S (Border of Midtown Phillips, East Phillips and Powderhorn Park neighborhoods) Dispatched to a robbery at the noted location. Spoke with the victim and was given 2 different locations as to where it happened. Report completed.

 

Aggravated Assault (2)

10-13, 1:12 am 28th St E & Bloomington Ave S (Border of Midtown Phillips and Phillips East neighborhoods) Arrestee (Mohamed Kamal Yusuf) booked at Hennepin County Jail for Probable Cause Flee Police in Motor Vehicle…Victims seen by medical personnel and given blue cards. Vehicle towed. MN State Accident Report completed.

 

10-15, 11:39 pm 29xx Oakland Ave S (Phillips West neighborhood) Arrestee (Dushawn Edward Brown) was booked for the listed charge. Victim filled out the domestic supplement, The Domestic hotline was called. Victim was given a blue card and advised.

 

Burglary (4)

10-13, 1:01 pm to 2:00 pm 28xx Portland Ave S (Phillips West neighborhood) Officer dispatched to the report of a burglary of dwelling.

 

10-14, 8:00 pm to 10-15, 6:00 am 31xx 17th Ave S (Powderhorn Park neighborhood)Burglary of Dwelling report taken at the listed location. Victim stated that sometime between the hours of 8 pm and 6 am an unknown suspect entered his unattached garage thru the unlocked small door and took his All city space Horse road bike, copper colored, with a moustache handle bar. Bike was worth approximately $1500. The suspects left behind a different bike that was left in victims garage. Suspect bike was property inventoried at the 3rd Precinct. Victim was given a blue card. There is no suspect information.

 

10-14, 12:00 pm to 10-17 1:00 pm 30xx 15th Ave S (Powderhorn Park neighborhood)Victim had two suspects stay with her for three days and pay rent. Victim felt she was being abused by suspects along with possibly being drugged. She asked them to leave. Victim went somewhere else to stay. Victim returned and found her lower north facing window that had been previously broken was pushed open and her items were stolen.

 

10-18, 11:00 pm 30xx 19th Ave S (Corcoran neighborhood) Victim stated that three black males kicked in the back door to his house and stole a PS3, multiple cell phones, a wallet with cash and a purse. Victim stated that all suspects left the residence through the back door and left in an unknown direction. Car 21 (Crime Lab) was not called to the scene because Victim stated that the males all wore leather gloves. Victim was given a blue card.

 

Auto Theft (2)

10-15, 11:01 pm Lake St E & 21st Ave S (Corcoran neighborhood) Officers booked a juvenile male for Motor Vehicle Theft.

 

10-16, 5:30 am to 7:20 am 18xx 28th St E (East Phillips neighborhood) Listed vehicle was stolen while parked outside front. Auto desk was notified.

10-13  28xx Bloomington Ave S: Mohamed Kamal Yusuf arrested and booked in Hennepin County Jail Flee Police in a Motor Vehicle (Felony) and False Information to Law Enforcement (Gross Misdemeanor).

 

10-13  Lake St E & 16th Ave S: Cecilia Juan Sosa cited for No Valid Drivers License.

 

10-13  29xx Chicago Ave S: Antonio Lee Brown arrested and booked in Hennepin County Jail for Replica Firearms (Gross Misdemeanor) and a Misdemeanor Warrant.

 

10-14  Lake St E & 17th Ave S: Tyree Michael Schultz issued a citation for No Proof of Insurance.

 

10-14  8xx Lake St E: Joshua Michael Rollins arrested and booked in Hennepin County Jail for a Felony Warrant, a Misdemeanor Warrant and Theft.

 

10-14  Lake St E & 2nd Ave S: Bra Gonzalez Martinez Martinez issued a citation for Driving After Cancellation.

 

10-16  28xx Oakland Ave S: Dushawn Edward Brown arrested and booked at Hennepin County Jail for Assault (Felony).

 

10-16  Lake St E & Clinton Ave S: Keith Robertson arrested and booked at Hennepin County Jail for Cancelled (Drivers License) Inimical to Public Safety.

Police Ask for Public’s Help in Severe Beating Case

Oct. 20, 2015 (MINNEAPOLIS) On Thursday, September 3rd at approximately 1:00 am, officers from the Minneapolis Police Department responded to the report of one down in the area of E. Lake Street and 12th Avenue South.

Upon arrival, officers located a Native American female in her late 20’s unconscious suffering from a severe head wound.  The woman remains in critical condition.

Anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a person in this case might be eligible for a cash reward.  Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or send an anonymous tip to CRIMES (274637) and begin message with: TIP674.  The case number is 15-332607.
