Keep Your Package Deliveries Secure
Many people will be having packages delivered to their homes this time of year. Unfortunately, this can mean a greater opportunity for theft. Please keep these security tips in mind:
- If possible, get the merchant to guarantee delivery on a certain date.
- Ship to a location where you know someone will be there to receive the package.
- If this isn’t possible, use a “signature required” delivery option.
- Another idea is to ask a trusted neighbor to watch for the package.
- If possible, synchronize deliveries-have several packages arrive on the same day.
- If you live in an apartment building, bring any packages left in a public area into a secure area.
- If you see anything suspicious, like someone taking a package from your neighbor’s property or following a delivery truck, call 911 immediately. Give detailed information to the 911 operator.
- If a delivered package is taken stolen from your property, this is a theft. File a police report by calling 311 (or 612-673-3000) going online at www.minneapolismn.gov.
Protect Packages While Shopping
- Stay aware of your surroundings when bringing packages to your car. If you think someone is following you, change plans and go to a public area.
- Lock all purchases in your trunk. In a vehicle without a trunk, put items out of view and keep the vehicle locked.
- Pick up major purchases at the end a shopping trip.
- Immediately remove all purchases from your car when you return home.
- If you see suspicious behavior, like people loitering in a parking lot and watching customers, call 911. Give detailed information to the 911 operator.
- If someone steals a package from your vehicle, this is a theft. File a police report by calling 311 (or 612-673-3000) going online atwww.minneapolismn.gov.
