Midtown Farmers Market launches Market Bucks program

The Midtown Farmers Market (MFM) was the first market in Minneapolis to accept SNAP/EBT food support benefits in 2006 and is pleased to announce a new incentive program this season called Market Bucks for customers who use SNAP/EBT benefits. The program started on June 12 and will continue throughout the season or until funds run out.

The Midtown Farmers Market continues to seek out innovative ways to support community efforts to grow, sell, distribute, and consume more fresh, sustainably produced and locally grown foods. Market Bucks is a pilot program that will expand customers shopping dollars while supporting our local farmers.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps low-income people and families buy the food they need for good health and the Market Bucks program will encourage them to use those dollars at the farmers market. Benefits are provided on an electronic card that is used like an ATM card and accepted at the Midtown Farmers’ Market in exchange for tokens used to buy produce.

Customers who use SNAP/EBT can participate at MFM and get up to $5 in matching Market Bucks every day they shop at the market and use their SNAP/EBT card.
It’s quick, easy and free.
How it works:
o SNAP/EBT customers stop at the Market Booth to get tokens
o They will get up to $5 in matching Market Bucks

Customers spend their Market Bucks at SNAP/EBT eligible vendors – just like tokens and go home with more fresh produce

This pilot program at the MFM is funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota. The initiative was created in partnership with the North Lyndale Market, the Northeast Farmer’s Market, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, Homegrown Minneapolis, and the Minneapolis Department of Health and Family Support.
Beginning in July North Lyndale and Northeast will begin accepting SNAP/EBT and Market Bucks as well.
