Events in the coming week on Lake Street include the Lake Street Rising Fundraiser at Sauce Spirits & Soundbar on the 27th, and the opening reception of the Jerome Emerging Printmakers Exhibition at Highpoint Center for Printmaking on the 28th.

Meetings & Gatherings:

May 28th: Breakfast with Gary Schiff
7:30 – 9:00 AM, 1515 E. Lake St. (Mercado Central)
Hear from State Demographer Tom Gillaspy about where Minnesota is headed. With the 2010 Census underway, Minnesota is finding clues to what our state will look like in the future. What challenges can we expect to face? Will suburbs die? Will seniors have a place to live? Will there be enough jobs? The changes in our population will affect everything from our housing market to jobs, education, health care, and economic growth.

June 4th: Early Mornings with Elizabeth Glidden
7:30 – 9:00 AM, 4762 Chicago Ave. S. (Turtle Bread)
This fall, voters will elect 5 new Directors to the Minneapolis School Board, including 3 by district and 2 at-large representatives.  Meet several of the candidates, hear their vision for Minneapolis Public Schools, and have time for Q&A during this early morning event.  Candidates confirmed to date include:  Hussein Samatar, Alberto Monserrate, T Williams, Dick Mammen, Mohamud Noor, Chanda Smith Baker, and David DeGrio.

June 1st: Lehmann Education Center Building Sale Meeting
6:00 – 7:30 PM, 1006 W. Lake St.
The meeting will give the community a chance to find out about the condition and status of the building as well as voice any thoughts or ideas for the building. To get to the meeting room, please use north door #4 on the west side of the building adjacent to the main parking lot. From there, please use the stairway or elevator immediately inside of door #4 and go to the second floor.

June 6th: LiveMSP "Buying into the City" Tour
11:00 AM, beginning at 920 E. Lake St. (Midtown Global Market)

From 11:00 – 1:00, Pick up a map, enjoy refreshments, talk to neighbors, and learn about homebuyer programs. >From 12:00 – 3:00, tour for-sale homes at your own pace!

June 9th
: Fair Hiring Forum: Building a Better Workforce – New Criminal Records Laws & Policies
8:00 – 11:30 AM, 1000 LaSalle Ave. Room 201 (University of St. Thomas)
You will learn about:
Policies that will help develop a stronger, more diverse workforce while remaining safe and limiting all types of liability;
Why national companies like Home Depot and Accenture are being sued for NOT hiring people with criminal records;
The potential liability for hiring someone with a criminal record;
New Minnesota laws impacting hiring people with criminal records;
Programs available to help with the placement of people with criminal records. 

The Latest on Lake:

  • Today a tamale shop, tomorrow the world. Finance & Commerce has a look at the "Mexican food empire" being built by Noelia & Enrique Garcia of La Loma Tamales.

  • Speaking of Mexican food entrepreneurs on Lake Street, Conan O'Brien's team ordered Manny's Tortas for their post-show nourishment on May 18. Congrats to Manny's for reaching the stars!

  • City Pages had a deep-fried asparagus contest last week, and Town Talk Diner was declared the winner.

  • Read up on the patio makeover underway at Stella's Fish Cafe, expected to debut in June.
